The history of The Navy Yard is steeped in industrial production. Facilities that were once used to build some of the Navy’s most famous warships have been completely renovated to service the most modern of industries.

The Navy Yard’s infrastructure, workforce, existing inventory of buildings, new development capacity and access to highways, rail and the Port of Philadelphia make it the ideal location for manufacturing, warehousing and distribution. Whether for traditional manufacturing or the high-tech assembly and manufacturing that marks a new era of growth for the region, The Navy Yard can meet the diverse needs of this changing sector.

Unique Facilities

The Navy Yard’s 3.3 million square feet of existing industrial buildings, along with the unique dry docks and piers, have established a strong base of industrial activity from which to grow. The site includes existing buildings that have been renovated as well as available land for new construction. Industrial, manufacturing and warehouse uses are adjacent to active rail lines, the regional highway system and Port of Philadelphia facilities.

We are able to offer a wide range of industrial facilities, from major shipbuilding infrastructure to small-scale assembly and distribution sites. And adding to this flexibility, Liberty Property Trust and Synterra Partners are developing 170,000 square feet of additional single-story flex space aimed toward the user who requires a combination of office, manufacturing and distribution functions in one location.

As an example of the range of options we offer, consider these two major industrial tenants at The Navy Yard:

  • Aker Philadelphia Shipyard, which operates the most modern shipbuilding facility in the United States here at the Yard. Aker’s shipyard encompasses over 110 acres and employees over 1,300 highly-skilled workers. Serving as an anchor to our industrial campus, Aker’s supplier network has occupied space within The Navy Yard to support this booming sector and assist in the construction of 2.5 new ships per year.  With over $2 billion in commercial ship construction, Aker has contracts that will keep the shipbuilder busy for years to come
  • The Tasty Baking Company selected The Navy Yard to be the location of their corporate headquarters and a 350,000 square foot baking facility and distribution center. The state-of-the-art facility will offer unprecedented access to highways and rail, allowing Tasty Baking to streamline efficiencies both in the baking of their products and their ability to deliver to their customers. The facility will take advantage of The Navy Yard’s size, scale and infrastructure, and the bakery will have a mezzanine floor for public tours to see actual production in process.
