Governor Tom Wolf and PennDOT Secretary Leslie S. Richards recently announced the approval of funding for 82 projects, including eight in Philadelphia, to improve transportation alternatives and enhance mobility and public accessibility across the commonwealth.
The administration awarded $997,000 to fund the development of a multiuse side path along South Broad Street to establish a stronger pedestrian and bicyclist experience in South Philadelphia. This new side path will improve the existing sidewalk and intersections from the Navy Yard to Pattison Avenue.
“Building for the future includes improving access to a variety of transportation options and these investments will promote safety and mobility for communities across Pennsylvania,” Governor Wolf said.
PennDOT evaluated applications and made selections based on: safety benefits, reasonableness of cost, readiness for implementation, statewide or regional significance, integration of land use and transportation decision making, collaboration with stakeholders, and leverage of other projects or funding.
A project completion date has not yet been determined. The Navy Yard is excited to be apart of this transformative project, which will create a better and safer connection for pedestrians and bicyclists traveling to and from the Navy Yard, and will complement the existing multi-modal connections with its free transit buses and planned bikeshare program.
