Celebrating Earth Day with a Bike Tour of The Navy Yard

From a commitment to encourage green building construction and innovative management practices, to our focus on the Smart Energy Campus and building a national center for energy research, education, and commercialization, The Navy Yard is at the leading edge of sustainability, and brings Philadelphia closer to Mayor Michael Nutter’s goal of becoming America’s greenest city.

With active initiatives in all aspects of planning, development, operations, and business development, PIDC puts sustainable business practices to work every day. To celebrate Earth Day, PIDC hosted the 2nd annual Earth Day Bike Tour of The Navy Yard, a public, free tour where cyclists embarked on a seven-stop sustainability initiatives tour of the campus.

Some of the tour stops included were:

  • The Sustainability Workshop, an alternative senior year high school program that utilizes a project-based learning model, where cyclists were wowed by the sustainably-focused projects the students are undertaking, including Landrafts, a highly efficient modular housing kit packed in shipping containers;
  • League Island Park, a 2.5 acre park designed by Wells Appel and KS Engineers, with innovative stormwater management features, is currently under construction and will open in early summer for the public’s enjoyment; and,
  • Bloom Energy installations at the Urban Outfitters, Inc. (URBN) campus, where Bloom Boxes, utilizes advanced fuel cell technology with roots in NASA’s Mars program, generating clean, reliable and affordable power. These Bloom Boxes provide URBN with 600kW of power, almost enough to meet the baseload needs of the campus each month.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the tour, and to the wonderful presenters from the EEB Hub, Liberty Property Trust, The Sustainability Workshop, Urban Outfitters, Inc., and the U.S. Navy.  If you missed it, mark your calendar for next year’s Earth Day (Tuesday, April 22, 2014)!

Navy Yard

The Navy Yard is considered the most successful redevelopment of a former military facility in the country and today is a growing community where companies and their employees thrive. Future growth will support up to 10 million square feet of commercial and residential development.
