The year 2014 was another very momentous year for The Navy Yard! We’re taking a look back on some major events and milestones of the year.

The Navy Yard welcomed 10 new companies to the campus, bringing the total of employees up to 11,500.

2014 brought many more amenities to The Navy Yard: welcoming the first hotel, Courtyard by Marriott South Philadelphia; Vetri Family’s Lo Spiedo opened in Building 500; and League Island Park, The Navy Yard’s fifth park, opened. It was announced that Mercer Cafe at The Navy Yard will be coming to Building 623 with an opening slated for April 2015. Central Green will be completed by June 2015, adding an additional 4.5 acres of park space to The Navy Yard. We’re looking forward to the warm weather, which will bring outdoor dining to the Courtyard, Lo Spiedo, and Mercer Cafe!

The Navy Yard Shuttles continue to expand its service as ridership grows! The program added a much-requested stop in Old City at 4th & Market and other flag stops throughout The Navy Yard. Both shuttle routes provided over 295,000 trips in 2014, a 20% increase over the previous year!

The Navy Yard was proud to present the inaugural Navy Yard 5k! This fun, free, and scenic 5k run took place at The Navy Yard on Wednesday, June 11, 2014. The 5k was coupled with a health fair in Crescent Park which featured several Navy Yard tenants sharing how to educate and improve on all aspects of workplace health, wellness, nutrition, fitness, and lifestyle. Check out the video recap here.

The Consortium for Building Energy Science (CBEI) completed two buildings at The Navy Yard: a full-spectrum retrofit on Building 661, a 38,000-square-foot former rec center that is CBEI’s headquarters; the second building is a 25,000-square-foot new construction project named the Penn State Center for Building Energy Education and Innovation. Both projects were completed with an investment of over $25 million.

Tasty Baking Company, makers of Tastykakes, celebrated its 100th birthday!

The Navy Yard Commerce Center development team Liberty Property Trust/Synterra Partners completed its last project in the Commerce Center. The building, designed by Environetics, offers 75,000 square feet of flex space 100% pre-leased prior to the groundbreaking. The companies locating to 4000 S. 26th Street are three international tenants: Clinigen, Ecosave, and WuxiApptec.

The Navy Yard hosted over 100 events in 2014, bringing more than 100,000 visitors to the campus! Some event highlights include: 8th annual Executives Breakfast, PAWS Mutt Strut, Broad Street Run, Susan G. Komen 3-Day Walk, Philadelphia 19th Century Base Ball Exhibition & Fair, Earth Day Week, Rescue Run, Be the Match Walk + Run, three beer/cider festivals, Great Chefs Event, PHS Fall Festival, PHeaSt, PSSC’s sports leagues, and many more!

Urban Outfitters, Inc. (URBN) completed renovations in May on Building 18, located between 16th and 17th Streets on Kitty Hawk Ave. This 92,000-square-foot building is the 11th building in URBN’s portfolio at The Navy Yard, and houses the headquarters for one of its brands, Anthropologie. Building 18 was formerly a metal foundry and is the only cross-shaped building at The Navy Yard, from a bird’s eye view.

A LOOK AHEAD: We’re looking forward to another exciting year at The Navy Yard!
