A delegation of more than 20 young leaders from countries across Europe visited the Navy Yard on January 30 as part of a larger visit to the U.S. through a State Department program to understand political, social, and economic issues in the U.S.
During the visit, Navy Yard leadership briefed the group on the history of the Navy Yard and how a former military site was revitalized into a mixed-use campus of more than 150 diverse businesses and 15,000 employees. The group also enjoyed a guided tour to learn about the past, present, and future of the Navy Yard.
The Philadelphia portion of the visit was organized by the World Affairs Council Philadelphia. The World Affairs Council of Philadelphia is a non-partisan, international affairs nonprofit with 130 years of expertise in connecting Philadelphia to the world. Through authentic people-to-people diplomacy and exchange of ideas, the Council advances Philadelphia’s understanding of the world by creating the next generation of global citizens and furthering Philadelphia’s position as an international hub for business, education, culture, and sub-national diplomacy. The Council curates speaker programs, professional development, youth education, and public diplomacy. The Council hosts global delegations and travels the world reaching more than 125 countries annually.
This program is done through a partnership with the U.S. Department of State-sponsored exchange program called the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP). The IVLP is the U.S. Department of State’s premier professional exchange program. Through short-term visits to the United States, current and emerging foreign leaders in a variety of fields experience this country firsthand and cultivate lasting relationships with their American counterparts.
