Cool Jobs at the Navy Yard: Whitney Taylor, Quality Assurance

The Navy Yard is filled with thousands of people doing amazing things! We had the opportunity to meet one of those people, working inside the industrial district of the Navy Yard. Meet Whitney Taylor, Quality Assurance Coordinator at Philadelphia Ship Repair.

Whitney has been working at Philadelphia Ship Repair for two years where she spends her time assuring a level of quality in the services Philadelphia Ship Repair provides.

What does your company do? Philadelphia Ship Repair makes up a larger company called Northeast Ship Repair, which is comprised of both Boston Ship Repair and Philadelphia Ship Repair. Since 1995, both east coast facilities have provided personalized services for domestic, international, and government vessels. Northeast Ship Repair provides required vessel maintenance, repair, overhaul, and conversion services that is unsurpassed in the industry.

Describe your typical work day. My typical work day as a Quality Assurance Coordinator consists of following a schedule of inspections that I would have generated and sent out the day before.  Every day has a different schedule, so it is never the same thing two days in a row.  I am responsible for coordinating the inspections with the vessel owner, the ship’s crew, our employees, American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), and United States Coast Guard (USCG).  A typical day will include weld inspections and testing, tank inspections, and paint inspections. On any one job there will be over 1,000 inspections aimed at ensuring the quality of the work, and safety of the vessel.

What’s your favorite thing about working at your company? At Philadelphia Ship Repair, there’s always something new. I am constantly exposed to new systems, new ships, and new problems. I love being able to find solutions and uphold the quality standards of our vessels. This year, I had the pleasure of working on USNS Bob Hope. The USNS Bob Hope is the lead ship of its class of large, medium-speed, roll-on roll-off (LMSR) vehicle cargo ships for the US Navy.  I have grown quite fond of this class of vessel. The photo below is me taking wear down readings on the starboard main bearing of the USNS Bob Hope.

Cool Jobs at the Navy Yard: Mel Sage, Design Builder

The Navy Yard is bursting with awesome people doing great things. We’re home to over 14,500 employees and over 160 companies. Each person here has a cool job with a unique story! One of those people is Mel Sage, Design Builder at Urban Outfitters.

Mel Sage has been working with Urban Outfitters (UO) as a Design Builder for only 1 month! Within her first few weeks in this role, we had the opportunity to chat about what she does as a Design Builder inside Building 611!

What does your company do? Urban Outfitters is apart of URBN, a portfolio of global consumer brands comprised of Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie, Free People, BHLDN, Terrain, and the Vetri Family. URBN is filled with passionate, creative, entrepreneurial people who think outside the box and are all about providing a unique shopping experience. For Urban Outfitters, I work on the Design Build team. My team creates fixtures for UO stores throughout the country. At the Navy Yard, our home is the Woodshop inside Building 611. Currently, we are building tables, shelves, and A-frames.

Describe your typical work day.
Alongside my teammates, we are building fixtures for 75 Urban Outfitters stores around the country. My role is mass-producing elements for those fixture. A typical work day for me would be something like this:

What’s your favorite thing about working at your company?
I find so much joy in working with my hands, and as a Design Builder, I get to do that every day. It’s exciting to be making fixtures, knowing that my pieces make up furniture that will be used all over the country.

Anything else you’d like to share?
Besides being a part of the design build team at UO, I started my own woodworking art business called Sage Woodworks. There I create wooden wall hangings and home goods inspired by nature and topography. Feel free to follow me online, @sagewoodworks.
