Today, there are more than 62,000 women serving in the U.S. Navy. On March 17, 1917, Loretta Perfectus Walsh was the women that started it all — she was the first woman to enlist in the U.S. Navy, the first woman to reach the rank of Chief Petty Officer, and the first woman to serve in a non-nursing capacity in any branch of the armed forces.
