On Saturday, March 23, the American Welding Society (AWS) and Rhoads Industries (Rhoads) hosted students from high schools across the five-county Philadelphia region to compete in a shielded metal arch weld (SMAW) competition at the Navy Yard.

The need to support and develop the next generation of skilled welders is a primary concern for industrial manufacturers like Rhoads, and the emphasis on local workforce development has never been greater. Dan Rhoads, owner and CEO of Rhoads, stated, “We are excited to partner with the AWS in hosting and sponsoring this competition, as it highlights some of the valuable trade skills needed in America in order to continue to our nation’s position as a leader in industrial manufacturing innovation and production.”

The participating schools elected a top-standing student to represent their high school during the competition. The chosen students then participated in a competition designed to test their ability and proficiency to employ specific welding processes.

Congratulations to the 3 winners!
