Beginning January 8, 2024, Broad St. will be reopening to traffic after nearly 18 months of construction and critical improvements!

The improvements on this 734-foot section of Broad St. (between Crescent Dr. and Intrepid Ave., known as the quay wall) will help ensure the safety and increase accessibility to the Navy Yard for the more than 150 businesses, 15,000 employees, tens of thousands of yearly visitors, and soon-to-be residents at the Navy Yard.

This approximately $22-million-infrastructure-improvement project was the result of a joint-venture project between PennDOT, the U.S. Economic Development Administration, City of Philadelphia, and PIDC.

When the project began in July 2022, the sidewalks adjacent to the Reserve Basin and several lanes of traffic on the street had been closed for years as the quay wall once sat on top of a more than 120-year-old timber-bridge structure that was largely submerged in the Delaware River and subjected to the elements.

Improvements will continue into the spring with enhancements to a two-way bike lane, a new scenic pedestrian plaza overlooking the Reserve Basin, and new landscaping around the street to beautify the space.

Navy Yard Master Plan

This project is one of many projects happening at the Navy Yard as we embark on our new development plan which was released in June 2022.

The $6 billion 2022 Navy Yard Plan charts the next 20 years of equitable growth at the Navy Yard. This update reflects the successful development of an expanding community of 150 employers and 15,000 workers and builds upon that success with an ambitious but achievable plan for equitable economic growth and the creation of a community to live, work, make, and play.

With the implementation of the 2022 Plan, the Navy Yard and our development partners at Ensemble/Mosaic will realize a responsive and visionary urban development that supports equitable and inclusive economic growth and emphasizes a resilient and cohesive public realm.
