Vincera Institute has relocated to Building 489 and has expanded to become a multi-service facility that has integrated top-flight specialties to create an aggregate approach to health and performance. Led by Dr. William C. Meyers, Vincera was previously located in Quarters M-1 since 2010, focusing on core injuries. Working with P&A Associates, Vincera developed and renovated the former USO building, located at 12th & Constitution Ave.

GridSTAR Net Zero Energy Demonstration Project Underway

A powerful collaboration of researchers, manufacturers and economic development officials are embarking on a groundbreaking demonstration project for smart-grid, net zero energy buildings called the GridSTAR Center — a Smart Energy Campus initiative at The Navy Yard in Philadelphia.

Spearheaded by Penn State with support from the U.S. Department of Energy, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and Philadelphia Industrial Development Corporation (PIDC), the GridSTAR Net Zero Energy Demonstration Structure is the first phase of the GridSTAR Center and will serve as a valuable hub for workforce training, building performance testing, energy management research and “smart” microgrid modernization deployments. Strategically located at The Navy Yard — which serves as a shining example of energy-related innovation and research — the structure is slated for completion this summer.

Shovels ready for the groundbreaking

Groundbreaking for the Energy Efficient Buildings Hub

The groundbreaking ceremony for the Energy Efficient Buildings Hub (EEB Hub) took place on April 24th to celebrate the development of two new buildings at The Navy Yard. With support from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the U.S. Economic Development Administration, Penn State University is developing two buildings to advance the EEB Hub’s unique dual mission– reducing regional energy use in existing commercial buildings by 20% by 2020 with cost-effective solutions, and promoting regional economic growth and job creation. Special guests Governor Corbett, Mayor Nutter, Penn State president Rodney A. Erickson, and Kathleen Hogan, deputy assistant secretary of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), attended the celebration.
